Calendar appointment attachment will not open, throwing "The operation failed"
Hi all- We have one user on our Exchange 2010 system that 'randomly' will have attachments on an appointment they created not open for anyone. When someone tries to open the attachment, it sends the error "The Operation Failed.", and nothing else. So far, I cannot re-create the issue, and it only affects some of the appointments from this specific user; in fact, most of the appointments created by this user have no problems with attachments. Since this has started happening, we have completely replaced the end user's machine, and the problem still exists. Whenever I try to save these problematic attachments to a location, I get a "Cannot save the attachment." error. I have also tried forwarding the appointment to an outside email account (gmail specifically), and I am still unable to open it (it says the attachment is 0k). Any help or thoughts on the problem would be welcome!

If it's 0kb when looking at gmail then it seems like the attachment is corrupt. How is it attached? Does it ever work, has it ever worked? (The same appt with the same attachment). What if you try via OWA? What typr of attachement is it? Is it the same type of appt? How is s created? Who send it if sent? How is it sent? mobile device? email? Clear temp files on the PC when this issue happens. Create a new MAPI profile and test. Sukh

Hi, I suspect maybe the user's mailbox has some problem. If convenient, please recreate a mailbox for him/her, then move mails to the new mailbox. Best Regards!

Hi All- Thanks for the replies, I have not had a chance to re-create the user account yet as this person sets up *many* appointments for people with their account, and I am trying to figure out the best way to copy everything over without effecting the current meetings that are setup with the account as the organizer. Any thoughts would be helpful :) Another strange behavior that only seems to happen with this account: Every so often the user will have one of their created appointments change where it says they are no longer the organizer, but instead an invited attendee. Originally, the appointments this happens to were created correctly, and show up as they should with the organizer information. This problem causes the affected appointment to not show the correct organizer information, such as who accepted or rejected the meeting.

Hi Sukh- 2. It is attached when the appointment is created by using the attach file button 3. Most attachments do not have this problem, just a few every now and then. There is no specific file type or pattern as far as I can tell 4. OWA does not open the attachment either 5. Various attachments, usually word documents or excel spreadsheets 6. I am not sure what you mean by same type of appointment, but they are non-recurring appointments 7. It is created by choosing "new appointment", just like every other appt. that does not have the problem 8. It is sent via outlook 2010 on a windows 7 (and windows xp before that) box 10. We completely replaced the machine with a new windows 7 box and the problem continues

We are running SP1 rollup 3, but it looks like there is an updated rollup 3 that I will install tonight 2. I have done the repair on the mailbox, and no problems were detected 3. I do not have a different database to move it to, but this problem existed in our Exchange 2007 installation as well, and moving to the Exchange 2010 server did not seem to fix the issue 4. There is local AV, the same one that runs on every other client machine; Do you mean it needs to be disabled until the problem happens again to rule it out?

If I try to save the message locally, I get a "This action cannot be performed on a read-only item. Copy the item to your local Calendar and try again. Note that this is on a different calendar then my own. The appointment count varies, but I would say 6-8 items a day on average.
